SEO for Small Business - Little Competition - Big Results

by BANG! Website Design • February 08, 2017

A recent study by Dr. David Ricketts, of the Technology & Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard revealed that only 17% of small businesses have marketing dollars invested in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in 2017. This means there will be little competition for small businesses that do make the investment in a SEO Campaign.

SEO / Search Engine Optimization

We define SEO as a series of tasks performed on an ongoing basis to influence a website's rankings on the search engines, namely Google since they dominate the search engine industry. Some of these tasks include...
  • Management of local business directory listings (60+)
  • Creation of in-bound links to the site
  • Directory Submissions
  • Blog Directory Submissions
  • PR Releases
  • Edits to website content to improve rankings
  • Monitoring of Google's Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools)
  • Link removal of poor quality links & creation of disavow files for Google
  • Monitoring of keyword rankings
The exact tasks aren't as important as the finished result. The end goal is generally to increase sales and we get to that goal by improving the rankings of the website for pre-determined keyword phrases. Once higher rankings are achieved, for the right keyword phrases, traffic to the site will follow. Assuming the website has been built with conversion in mind, new leads will begin to pour in or direct sales for ecommerce sites.

Here at BANG! we have been performing Search Engine Optimization on many of the websites we built over the last 21 years. The success of a site in generating leads or sales is greatly enhanced when the site ranks well. As we have put it in the past...

"Having a website without Search Engine Optimization is like spending your entire advertising budget on a TV commercial without buying any air time to show it to the world."

The image below is a screen shot of a monthly report for one client showing their ranking results. You will note that the rankings change rapidly, sometimes up and sometimes down. As rankings increase for one keyword phrase, sometimes the results fall for others. This is not uncommon and you should expect variations like this, especially when a Google algorithm update is released.
